MIDDLE SCHOOL COMMITTEE

Director: Santiago Finol

Co-Director: Joel Bronstein

Topic Summary:

Since Qatar was awarded the honor of hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup in 2010, many measures have to be taken to prepare the country for such an event. The first part of this process was to adapt, built, and modernize each of the stadiums that will be used for the event. Nine stadiums were built and three stadiums were renovated. For this process, many workers are needed to be able to keep the project going causing the problem of this constructions to be the number of people needed and the amount of money they are awarded for their work. On average, the typical builder in Qatar earns around $30 (when the promised salary is $400) per month. This causes them to not being able to sustain their family, yet the low wages may not even be the biggest problem for many of these workers.

In modern times, most stadiums have at least 50,000 seats causing the architects to build tall stadiums making the job even more dangerous. The lack of security measures is also one of the main problems because one can’t find secure areas or even people be appropriately held while working on high parts of the stadium. For these reasons, many die while working as a consequence of the extremely dangerous working conditions of these stadiums.
