Crisis Committee - Bush’s Cabinet on the war with Iraq

Director: Alexa Jenkins

Co-Director: Alejandro Zamora

Topic Summary:

The United States government formed a War Cabinet in order to overthrow Saddam Hussein out of power in Iraq and to deal with the Weapons of Mass Destruction that Iraq allegedly had. Under the commands of president George W. Bush, the US started surveillance in Iran, Iraq and the Middle East in order to persecute the Taliban and Al Qaeda. While some people alleged that Saddam Hussein supported Al Qaeda, others declared that the reason for wanting to overthrow Hussein was to end a long-lasting military dictatorship and bring a democracy to the people of Iraq.

Furthermore, the United States believes that Iraq is under the procession of chemical and biological weapons in violation of past UN resolutions and are in efforts to develop nuclear weapons. Bush has also claimed that Iraq could give chemical or biological weapons to terrorists, and therefore a preemptive strike is necessary. Iraq denies the possession of such weapons, which were searched for in 1998. The United States is pressing for a resolution by the United Nations, allowing their intervention and search for the weapons.

Besides the interests in the War on Terrorism and the WMD in Iraq, the War on Iraq is about the oil industry. Iraq accounts for one of the largest oil reserves in the world, which are of great interest to the Americans and the British. A complete open flow of the Iraqi oil industry to the US and British economies would permit the United States to expand their spheres of influence and further impose their global hegemony. The United States wants to protect the Middle East politically and militarily in order to keep the oil industry free-flowing, cheap and available for the US and its allies.
